A Few Things to Pack for Your River Cruise Holiday

A Few Things to Pack for Your River Cruise Holiday

While we all enjoy taking holidays to some of the most beautiful places around the world, it can be an experience full of stress and problems, with getting through the airport and reaching your connecting transfer just some of the biggest culprits. If you are looking for a holiday experience in which you can relax as soon as you leave your front door, a river cruise holiday could be exactly what you are hoping to find.
Growing hugely in popularity in recent years, particularly on rivers such as the Seine, Moselle and Danube, river cruise holidays allow you to relax in the height of comfort while you glide along the waterway to a selection of unforgettable cities, towns and landmarks. If you are new to river cruises, it may be helpful to identify what exactly to pack in your suitcase.
First things first, make sure you pack the correct clothing for your journey. So that you don't leave any important items behind, take the time to do your homework and check out the weather of the resorts you are visiting as part of your itinerary. This should be a simple method in working out whether to pack a decent raincoat to keep dry or a sun hat to avoid sunburn.
Another handy item which is so often needed by people is a translation book. While it's likely all the staff on board the vessel will have a grasp of English, it will be a far different situation while you peruse the streets of Strasbourg, Koblenz, Cologne, or any other cities on your cruise route. A phrase book helps you break through the language barrier and will ultimately assist you in learning more about the culture of the places you visit. It's for this reason alone why it should be included among your necessary travel documents.
Purely for precautionary measures, a medication pack should be among the first items you take in your suitcase; it could be a lifesaver should you start to not feel 100% during the trip. While the staff on your cruise will certainly be on hand to help you with any serious incidents, it could be an idea to take a few painkillers to help shake off a sore head from all that wine you enjoyed the night before. Also be sure to pack some seasickness aids; forgetting them could turn your dream cruise into a nightmare!
These are the most important items which should be at the top of your packing list. Once the suitcase is sorted, all you have to do then is wait a short while until you embark on an unforgettable river cruise holiday experience.

Hotel Security: Top 5 Tips To Staying Safe and Secure In Hotels

Hotel Security: Top 5 Tips To Staying Safe and Secure In Hotels

Whether guests at a seven star hotel or a seven dollar hostel there are certain things that travelers need to consider when staying in overnight accommodation. Here are our top 5 tips for staying safe and secure in a hotel environment.
1. Room to Improve: If you have the option to pre-book a room or choose where in a hotel to stay think about a few things.
  • What floor to stay on - the general consensus is between the 2nd floor and 6th floor. This way people can't easily gain access to your room windows but fire fighters can reach with their ladders.
  • The risks of the area - Are you staying in a hostile environment? If there is a risk of IED's, car bombs or suicide bombers think about getting a room at the back of the hotel or the opposite of where cars can drive up to the entrance. Perhaps even away from the general lobby area.
If you are not happy with the location of your room, ask to move to a different one.
2. Fire first:
This is a saying we use to remind travelers that as soon as you arrive at your hotel spend a few minutes to ask yourself, what if there was a fire or other emergency?
As soon as you get into your room, place your bags on the bed and exit the room. Look for your nearest fire exit and nearest fire extinguisher, picture reaching these in the dark and count either steps or number of doors between your room and the these points. You may have to find these in the dark or when there is smoke blinding you. Don't stop there, check the fire exit and ensure it is in fact a viable option. Then when you are happy head back to your room.
3. Fire second:
There was a tragic story of a whole family dying from a small fire within their home. They were sleeping with every door open and all the toxic fumes traveled freely throughout each bedroom killing the occupants as they slept. When fire fighters arrived they only found the pet dog alive as he was shut in a small utility room. The door had protected the dog from the fire and fumes. This story re-enforces the fact that a room can protect the inhabitants from smoke and heat for a considerable amount of time if done properly.
Fire second is a saying we teach our students. Once you have identified the fire exits and returned to your room, ask yourself again, what if there was a fire? If there is no escape from the exits then this room will be your citadel, your safe room.
  • Look at the window, does it open, what floor are you on? Can you jump? If not does it open to give you fresh air.
  • How does the door open and unlock. Is there a key? If so always leave it in the same place.
  • Is there a bath - in an emergency you can fill this up with water and use it to douse the door and walls.
  • If there is a fire and you cant escape then wet towels and block any gaps around the door.
If traveling to less developed countries or regions think about taking portable fire and carbon monoxide alarms. Both are cheap, small and easy to use and well worth the small amount of space they take up.
4. Double the Door
Your hotel room door is your best barrier to external risk. When inside your room make sure that you use all the locks provided. Do not open the door unless you are a 100% sure to whom you are opening it for. If there is a peephole, use it.
There a few great items on the market that can provide a second layer of door security think about taking these, as they are small and cheap.
  • Door wedge
  • Door lock ratchet
When you leave the room, use the peephole, make sure there is no one outside. When you come back to the room do not assume that it is secure. The majority of hotel room locks can be defeated quite easily, many people have access to the keys and it would be a mistake to assume that no one could have got in. Take caution, have a quick look around and then relax once you have checked and the door is locked behind you.
The Hamas chief Al-Mabhouh killed by Mossad in a Dubai hotel room made the mistake of assuming his hotel room was secure. Mossad used either a very simple and easily attainable machine to decode the electronic door or the tried and tested string and wire technique that can open many doors which have the tiniest of gaps between the door and floor.
It is not just the intelligence services that know these tricks, many criminals and attackers have the means and the motivation to go to these lengths.
5. Complacency is a dirty word:
  • If you hear an alarm, do not ignore it. React quickly and use your pre-determined exit. We do not mean panic and run out in your underwear screaming, but just make sure you do react. Get dressed, get your shoes on, stay calm, prepare to leave the hotel and take your room key, if there is a fire and there is no escape you may have to get back to your room, close your door behind you. Try and avoid using the hotels muster point or emergency gathering location. Sometimes hostiles will use an alarm to gather people in one spot before attacking or carrying out a secondary attack.
  • If you wake up in the middle of the night for no reason, check that there is in fact NO reason, take a few seconds to listen, look and sense if something is wrong. If nothing go back to sleep...
  • If you see smoke or fire when in a hotel do not assume someone else has reported it. Initiate a fire alarm or call the hotel. Especially when you are in your room call the emergency services as well, do not assume the hotel will call them. Hotels are unwilling to call the emergency services until they have checked out the incident themselves for fear of creating a false alarm. This can cause a significant delay. There have been many horror stories of deaths and injuries caused by these delays. Take control of the situation yourself.
  • Do not assume that because you are in a hotel you are safe. If you are in a lift and someone else comes in that you are unsure of wait for him or her to push a floor before you do. Make sure no one is following you towards your room.
Most importantly as with all of our advice, do not develop irrational fear, do not think that everyone is out to get you. Instead just increase your awareness, listen to your sixth sense and take the time to prepare for certain scenarios. Time spent preparing and planning is never wasted, it can also mean the difference between life and death.

Hartford CT Historic Homes: Day-Taylor House

Hartford CT Historic Homes: Day-Taylor House

The Day-Taylor House was built in 1857 in a beautiful Italian Villa style architecture at the same time that Samuel Colt, the creator of the Colt Revolver built his Armsmear estate directly across the street. Located at the center of the Colt Architectural legacy at 81 Wethersfield Avenue, it has been a residence of several prominent Hartford, Connecticut families.

The Day-Taylor House was built by Hirim Billel, the highly esteemed Hartford builder who also built Connecticut's State Capitol and the Memorial Arch in Bushnell Park. It was influenced by the ideas of Andrew Jackson Downing who wrote treatises on landscape design and architecture that were widely popular at the time. It is an example of a style that Downing called "Italianate" based on Italian farmhouses that were also being depicted in popular landscape paintings of the period.

The three story red brick masonry and white trimmed building has an asymmetrical facade dominated by floor-to-ceiling arched windows at every level, balconies, cast-iron lintels and a flat-roofed cupola. The brackets lining the low-pitched roof and cupola are particularly detailed and ornate. The three-part veranda of the front facade is supported by elaborate Corinthian columns. The front facade has remained unchanged since its original construction.

The first owner and resident was Albert F. Day, a descendant of Robert Day who was one of the original colonial settlers of Hartford. The house was later occupied by his father, a Connecticut Attorney General. Later owners included Mary Borden Munsill of the Borden Milk company and Edwin Taylor. In 1928 the house was bought by the Fraternal Order of Eagles who used it as a meeting house, and headquarters. In 1974 it was bought by the Hartford Redevelopment Agency.

The Day-Taylor House is also significant located in Hartford's Colt architectural legacy which stretches along both sides of Wethersfield Avenue for two blocks. The area has become designated as the Coltsville Historical District.

The Day-Taylor House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It had a significant restoration in 1979 and the building now serves as offices. The combination of it being built by one of Hartford's most distinguished builders Hirim Billel, that it was built the same year and directly across the street from the Samuel Colt Home and the Armsmear Estate Park, and that it has been owned and occupied by so many notable Hartford residents makes it one of Hartford, Connecticut's most important historical homes.

Planning A Buenos Aires Vacation: Where To Eat During Your Travels

Planning A Buenos Aires Vacation: Where To Eat During Your Travel

While there's plenty to do in Buenos Aires, one favorite activity of nearly every traveler is exploring new restaurants. Luckily for vacationers visiting this city in Argentina, there are thousands of delicious places to stop and refuel. Before you head out for your vacation, take a few minutes to learn what restaurants you absolutely must not miss during your vacation.

Breakfast? Yes, Please!

Breakfast starts your day off right, even while you're vacationing. Luckily you'll have a number of options here! If you're looking for a simple coffee and pastry, consider Café Lattente. It's a small coffeeshop where you'll find professional baristas who are skilled in the art of making a delicious cup of coffee. Another local favorite is the Full City Coffee House. Here, patrons will find a full food menu, as well as what's considered to be one of the city's best cups of café con leche.

If you're looking for something a little more substantial than just coffee, consider Café Rivas. The breads are said to be the highlight of every meal, though the atmosphere also shines.

Refuel Your Body With Lunch

After sightseeing all morning, you're probably hungry, even if you had a hearty breakfast. For an inexpensive, but delicious lunch, consider El Cuartito. Here you'll find pizza, but you might be shocked about the different flavor combinations that are available. Some favorites are the Napolitana, the Calabresa, the Atomic and the Fugazzeta with ham. If you're there for lunch, it's possible to buy single slices for around $2, which makes El Cuartito a very affordable option.

Another excellent option is Broccolino. This is an Italian restaurant that's said to have amazing food and extremely large portions. Consider trying the spinach crepes, the tagliatelle, calamari and brushetta since they're all local favorites.

Experience Dinner In Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is known for its steakhouses so you must visit at least one during your vacation. One favorite is La Cabrera. Realize that this place is extremely popular so that you should take the time to make a reservation -- even on a weeknight. The portions are large, but these ample portions do come with a hefty price tag so don't forget your wallet!

Not to be confused with La Cabrera is La Cabana. The ribeye, known locally as the ojo de bife, is said to be one of the best steaks in town, but the side dishes and wine also shine. Like La Cabrera, La Cabana can also be quite expensive.

Don't Forget About Dessert

If you're vacationing in Buenos Aires, take this opportunity to splurge a little and definitely order dessert. Some popular dessert places in Buenos Aires include Volta, Freddo and Persicco for ice cream and Smeterling Patisserie for cake.

Vacations are the time to indulge in foods that you wouldn't otherwise enjoy and a trip to Buenos Aires is no exception. Don't forget to enjoy your meals in between all the sights and you'll leave the city full, satisfied and with a number of memories that you'll treasure forever.

Planning Your Barranquilla Vacation: What To Do, Where To Eat And Where To Stay

Planning Your Barranquilla Vacation: What To Do, Where To Eat And Where To Stay

The summer vacation season is fast approaching and if you're looking for a unique travel experience, consider a trip to South America. One of the best times to visit Colombia is in June and July because the country is experiencing its dry season so visitors can experience the country's culture without worrying about a rain downpour! If you're looking for a vacation that can't be duplicated elsewhere, consider a trip to Barranquilla. But before you go, take some time to thoroughly research what to do, where to eat and where to stay. Although this guide isn't all-inclusive, it does cover some of the city's best highlights.

What To Do In Barranquilla

Whether you're experiencing an adult only vacation or you're traveling with children, the Barranquilla Zoo shouldn't be missed. Although the zoo isn't as large as some of the world's major ones, its size makes for an extremely personal visit. Guests will be able to get close to the animals, which means they get to go home with some amazing photographs that can't be found elsewhere. Animals at the zoo include zebras, flamingos, lions, tigers, lemurs and reptiles. Admission to the zoo is relatively inexpensive and it does have a variety of snacks and drinks for sale.

The city also has a famous carnival that takes place every year. If you're not lucky enough to coincide your visit with the carnival, you can experience it at Sala del Carnaval Elsa Caridi. Here, you'll be able to learn about the history, the music and the dancers that participate in the city's celebration.

Where To Eat In Barranquilla

Because of the city's proximity to the water, seafood is a major delicacy. If you're looking for delicious seafood, head to Varadero. The food is Cuban and many weekends you can find a Cuban band performing while you eat. Although the wine list is extensive, many visitors report that the mojitos shouldn't be missed. A meal at Varadero will set you back at least $25 USD though so bring your wallet.

If you're looking for local, Colombian fare, head out to La Terraza de la Casa. The service is quick and you'll even be able to order food to go if you need to eat on the run. The pork sandwich is said to be one of the best things on the menu and a meal here costs just $5-10 USD.

Where To Stay In Barranquilla

Visitors can find locally owned hotels, and internationally known chains in Barranquilla. Popular places to stay include the Estelar En Alto Prado Hotel, Hampton Inn, Dann Carlton, Howard Johnson Hotel Versalles and Sonesta Hotel.

How Renting a Car Can Save You Money on Vacation

Vacations cost a lot but taking your family on a holiday is something you enjoy and are intent on doing more of in the future. With that being said, it's more important now than ever to stretch your travel dollar. You want to enjoy yourself without going broke, right? Well, how do you do it when everything costs so much?
With plane tickets, accommodations, food, and entertainment, your bank account can take a beating. Don't forget to factor in the cost of transportation. Every taxi cab ride you take will cost you a small fortune. If you want to get around a city with ease and without the unpredictability of public transportation, rent a car. You'll save time and money as well as avoid the frustration of arranging rides to your chosen destinations by having a rental car on your trip.

Here's how a car rental can save you money on vacation:

1. Despite having to pay a car rental charge per day and fill up on gas when needed, you don't need to make arrangements every time you need to go somewhere. You can load up your family in a car or van and travel everywhere you want to go. You can view multiple landmarks and monuments, go out to eat for lunch and dinner, and even pack a picnic and go to a park or the beach. You're not limited to sightseeing in the area of your hotel or condo. You can even go to neighboring cities to see what they have to offer.

2. You won't have to pay a cab driver or learn complicated bus lines or train schedules. Who doesn't want to save a bundle while traveling? Having extra money in your wallet allows you to take advantage of cultural activities, exciting nightlife, and delicious cuisine. Why pay for a cab, bus ticket or train ticket for each family member when you can load everyone up in one vehicle.

3. You can ride in style. Your family can take advantage of free events, Happy Hour, and discounted museum days with ease. Everyone will be comfortable, happy, and ready to make the most of the day. You won't have to worry about the kids tiring easily and having to make a bee line to the closest bus or train station. They can nap while you travel to your next event. This allows you to maximize your vacation dollar by taking advantage of all there is to offer in the city that you're visiting instead of a few costly tickets to a theme park.

Rental cars are advantageous. Make sure to look into renting a vehicle the next time you go on vacation. Your family will save money on transportation, be able to stay out later because they're not forced to walk miles and miles to sightsee, and enjoy homemade lunches as well as cold drinks because you can easily bring a cooler with you and spend the day outdoors soaking up the sun.

Sea Kayaking at the East Coast of Scotland

Sea Kayaking at the East Coast of Scotland

Starting at the very north of the Moray Firth, at Caithness. At Duncansby are some of the most impressive sea cliffs and sea stacks in the whole country. Just a kilometre south of the headland are the Stacks of Duncansby, which are impressive triangular shaped sea stacks. The easiest way to start this trip would be at Freswick Bay, a nice sandy beach just a few km south of the stacks.

Just to the south near Noss Head you will find Sinclair Bay with a vast beach stretching over 4km. This is again a great launching spot for a sea kayak. Noss Head only a few clicks away from the beach has some impressive cliffs and you might also spot Sinclair castle from the water. Just around the corner from the headland is Wick, an old Caithness town with many grey stone buildings, typical for the area.

South of Wick and all the way to Lybster you will again find many interesting cliff formations, sea stacks and natural arches. The paddling journey would be about 20km. Just after leaving Wick you will also notice Old Wick Castle at the top of the cliffs. On this paddle journey there are few and far between stopping points. One would be at Sarclet which is home to just a few houses and a small haven. Arriving in Lybster you will find a little pier where you can land your craft.

The area in Sutherland between Golspie and Dornoch is just white beaches as far as your eyes can see. Some of these beaches are really good for surfing when the sea swells come in from the north or east. Since it is all beaches it would be a soft landing should anything go wrong. The beaches stretch over 12km and they are very popular with people in Dornoch. Just passed the mouth of Dornoch Firth are again vast beaches but should be avoided since it is a training area for fighter planes from Lossiemouth. This area should only be paddled if the Aberdeen Coastguard is giving you the all clear.

There is another nice sea kayaking trip starting at the small village of Portmahomack passing Tarbet Ness. This headland can pick up some big waves on a windy day, since there is a massive stone slab just under the water, creating the perfect condition for big surf waves. Maybe not the best idea on a windy day. The coast sees many sea cliffs and few good landing spots. Just south of Balintore, at Sandwick Bay, is another nice beach to finish a good paddling day.

South of Balintore, on the Black Isle is the Highland village of Cromarty, which is well known for its craft shops and even Prince Charles is fond of this place. There are again good beaches to start a trip. You can then paddle down the coast with sea cliffs and interesting rock formations towards Chanonry Point. This area is home to many dolphins which can be seen often at the point for some feeding and a play in the tide race. Of course you would have to keep your distance from the sea mammals so not to disturb their routine.
On the other side of Chanonry point is Fort George. This Fort was built after the 1745/46 Jacobite uprising and was meant to keep the Highlander clan in bay. Today it is a museum run by Historic Scotland. Some parts of the Fort are still a functioning military base with rifle ranges and the Blackwatch Regiment a frequent visitor to the Barracks.

Further along the coast are still more beaches and sea cliffs to admire. Cummingston is a very popular area for rock climbers and you will find some people climbing these sandstone cliffs at most days. After passing the harbour village of Hopeman you will come across some sea caves at the cliffs to the east of the harbour. The stretch between Hopeman and Lossiemouth are again many sea cliffs with a nice sandy beach at the end of it. On some days you might even spot some Tornado jets taking off from the RAF base in Lossiemouth. Further along the Moray coast you near Cullen you will find a sea stack called the Bow Fiddle Rock, which are some sea stacks with and impressive natural arch to one side.
